What are PFAS

What is PFAS?

Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large group of manmade chemicals that have been used in industry and consumer products since the 1950s. PFAS are used in fire-fighting foams, stain repellants, nonstick cookware, waterproof clothing and shoes, fast food wrappers, and some personal care products. There are many different types of PFAS such as Perfluorocarboxylic Acids and Perfluorofulfonates. PFAS is a synthetic chemical that does not occur naturally but is widespread in the environment and does not break down easily.

The Kinetico K5 Reverse Osmosis System has been certified for the removal of PFAS chemicals from household water.

PFOS Concerns

The MDEQ has stated that the largest concern for humans is in the consumption of PFOS/PFAS contaminated water. Some scientific studies suggest that certain PFAS may affect different systems in the body. Although more research is needed, some studies in people have shown that certain PFAS may cause reproductive and developmental problems, liver and kidney issues, immunological effects, cancer, and thyroid hormone disruption.

Solutions

The USEPA and the MDEQ being most concerned about the consumption of PFOS contaminated drinking water are recommending drinking bottled water, having a carbon filter, or a reverse osmosis system for all your drinking and cooking water needs. Kinetico Northern Michigan is your premier supplier of bottled water serving Central and Northern Michigan. We carried systems that are custom built to suit the individual needs of each household or business. Kinetico Northern Michigan is also your premier Kinetico dealer. Kinetico has the highest-rated reverse osmosis system in the K5 drinking water system. Studies and tests show that the K5 has performed amazingly well in applications with PFOS contamination with results consistently showing “ND” results (Non-Detectable).

Kinetico Northern Michigan has made recommendations of having both whole-home PFOS reduction systems along with a reverse osmosis drinking water solution.
